Quick and easy fix for mangled knee joints

Postby blindsaypatten » Wed Jul 12, 2017 12:35 am

Credit to jujube for posting the link to the tension map video in the muscles thread where I found this method!

If you have done much posing of MakeHuman characters you know that some joints get mangled when bent, forming a crease on the side of the joint that is compressing, for example knees:

Just add a Corrective Smoothing modifier to the body:

And presto! Much improved bending action:

Here's an animated demo:

You can use a vertex group if you only want to apply the modifier to a particular joint or want to use different Repeat values for different joints.

Edit:
Ah, I knew it was too good to be true.

It does a nice job on the shoulder:

becomes:

but clothing doesn't keep up:

Well, I guess there is still cloth simulation to deal with that...

That shoulder looks a lot better, I should try using this with makewalk.

Thank you!
I always use the Corrective Smooth modifier on my characters and some of the clothes but of some unclear reason I never thought of testing a greater value than 1 on repeat.
Now I have weight painted all areas that needs to be adjusted and suddenly posing looks much better than ever.
