MakeHuman → Opensim, using the expression mixer

Postby Déesse » Fri Aug 07, 2015 6:14 pm

August 2015
It seems that for the moment the Opensim-rig is missing in the nightlybuilds. So I prepared a PortableApp-package (for windows) containing an older version of MakeHuman, together with blender-portable, both are customized with the mhx2-files and makewalk that you will need for the following tutorial.

EDIT: New Version (March2016) Download: http://bit.ly/1QGuB0U (526mb), including Manuellab and booltool

You want to create more individual avatars? A nice feature is the 'expression mixer'.
First model your avatar as usual. Then go to the expression mixer tab and use the sliders to add more details.
Save the created expression and your character. Export your character with mhx2 and A-pose. Make sure that you selected 'low poly' for the eyes and the Opensim-rig. You will find the mhx2-file and the textures in the V1-folder in the MakeHuman-folder in your documents.

Now open Blender, import your mhx2-avatar. Follow the hints in the illustrations. Open the makewalk-tab, set T-pose, hit 'current pose>>>' too and apply with 'Ctrl+a' the change to the new pose.

Next step is to change from posemode to objectmode. Then hit 'a' to select all, open the right toolshelf and rotate the avatar. Ctrl+a to apply the rotation.

Export Collada (.dae) the way you see it in the illustration.
Upload, done! (Hope it works for you :o )

Does setting T-pose from within MakeHuman also work for this?

No, it doesn't. You have to choose between expressions or pose. When you have modelled your expression and go back to poses and select the T-pose, the expression snaps back to the general modelled face.

Then this must be a bug, as expressions should be combineable with poses.
The strange thing is, on my version it works perfectly. If you are using the latest nightly, perhaps you could help shed light on when expression and pose mixing does not work?

Thank you, duststorm, for the advice to try once again. Now I found out the missing steps and it works :)

Okay, what you have to do:

1. First model your expression in A-pose. Save your expression. It will be saved in: documents -> Makehuman -> V1 -> data -> expressions

2. Go to Pose/Animate, set T-Pose in 'Pose' and load your expression. Now you should be able to export your character as dae-file and upload it directly to Opensim.

Ah, you were using the "expression mixer". Now I understand.
These are just development tools, just like the material editor. Indeed, you have to save the result and then load it from the library again to make it work properly.
The same goes for saving MHM files, you need to save the result and select it from a library to be able to save it.

One addition: The advantage of the way using mhx2 is that you get more relaxed hands, what you will need for special poses.
